The success of vertical M&A can be seen in the acquisition of Aetna at a cost of $70-billion by CVS Health. This deal transformed the healthcare industry by combining pharmacy and health insurance into one. The energy sector also experienced a vertical merger in the form ONEOK’s purchase Magellan midstream Partners L.P. for an impressive $18.8 Billion. The deal is expected to reshape the infrastructure for oil and gas. Similar to this, the state-owned Chinese company ChemChina combined with its rival Sinochem into the world’s largest industrial chemical conglomerate. This is a clear illustration of how M&A can be leveraged in times of uncertainty.
